HEDIARD
PRESERVES
Famous all over the world
|
Ferdinand Hédiard was scarcely thirteen when he
announced to his parents that he wanted to enroll as a Compagnon
du Tour de France. He did not long remain an apprentice: during
his travels, he happened to spot a cargo of exotic fruit in the
port of Toulon. In those days such produce was extremely rare.
The use of fruits in various products would become his specialty.
In 1850, Ferdinand opened his first shop, The Comptoir d'Epices
et des Colonies (Colonial Spice Company). In 1854, he moved to
a small shop at 21 Place de la Madeleine, an excellent address.
It was a delightfully busy square, with its fine church, tall
shade trees, picturesque flower market and three fine restaurants.
Many a cosmopolitan and noteworthy figure could be seen shopping
at Hédiard, a melting pot of maharajahs, the Egyptian
bey, kings, princes and Hollywood stars. The flagship store and
restaurant are still on Place de la Madeleine, while the company
has grown to oversea distribution to select shops in France and
on four continents. |
